Taming the Task Monster

Procrastination often occurs as a a result of our own mental roadblocks. We avoid a task off because it is tedious, difficult, or overwhelming, or we think we lack the necessary skills, supplies or confidence to accomplish it. Here's how to break free from such obstacles and get the job done:
Tear the Task Monster Apart (literally):

Draw a picture of a scary monster (be messy and creative). Write a task on each arm, leg, horn, ear or fang. Each time an activity has been completed, tear off limb.
De-Awfulize:
If you're avoiding a project because you can't do it perfectly, stop and take a deep breath. What would happen if you did a mediocre or a bad job? It's likely that the consequences aren't dire (and even more likely that it'll work out fine) so get started.
Break It Up:
Intimidating tasks become less scary when they're broken into smaller, more manageable parts. Make a list, create a mind map or use sticky notes to transform a big project into a series of sub-tasks. Attack one piece at a time, starting with what you can manage immediately. Accomplishing one step will give you the confidence to keep going.
Find the Fun:
Brainstorm ways to make must-dos less hum-drum. Play a fabulous song and dance around the room while you work. Or use products with a little zip, like bright folders, colored pens and funky paper clips.
A Friend or Two:
Enlist friends, relatives or a professional (consider hiring an organizer) to give you a hand. No one is an expert in every area. Do what you do well and get help where you need it.
Discover the YES Zone:
Can you stand on one foot for 5 minutes? Yes? With the right mindset, you can do almost anything for 5 minutes. Pick a long, upbeat song, and work on one area of organizing for as long as it plays. You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish in just five minutes a day.
I love Nike's logo, "Just Do It." It applies to creating order as well as getting fit. So lace up your tennis shoes and start organizing (now)!
