Little Writer's Center

I love completing projects with my kids; if you follow my blog you know that I select weekly themes to celebrate our love of learning, art and fun. Last year I decided to carve out a spot where my kids could create on their own. I was so inspired by this writer's corner that I couldn't resist making one for my kids too.
If this project looks intimidating, don't worry. The essentials are simple and not costly, and the resulting masterpieces are worth the effort.
- Choose a Spot: I dressed up an old shelf by giving it a fresh coat of blue paint, then added curtains and applied two coats of chalkboard paint across the lower half. If you don't have a spare piece of furniture, simply clear a space on a bookshelf, small table or cupboard.
- Writing Utensils: Glass jars tied with a bit of ribbon make clever containers for chalk, pencils and pens (if your workspace has a tile floor, you may want to consider something less breakable). The tools are easily visible, but they stay organized and can be toted from spot to spot. Also, clean up is easy.
- Learning Tools: My kids think flipping through an old Rolodex is fun (and little do they know, educational)! I made a list of mystery words on my kids' reading level to sound out and learn, so they can explore new vocabulary. Two shoe boxes covered in pretty paper store mini note books and and letters from discarded games. The supplies can be used to play school, invent games and spell words.
- Paper Products: I used labeled wire baskets (check the bath section of your local superstore) to house plain and lined paper.
You probably already have the necessary materials to put a writing center together. Keep it easily accessible, in case the next great American novelist is living under your roof--or more likely just a kid who likes to write notes and and doodles.>
